ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT SERIES: THE NEW IRISH EMIGRATION

James Wickham
TCD professor of Sociology

In Ireland we still often understand emigration in terms of the coffin ships and the emigrant wake. Yet emigration from Europe today is very different – at its simplest it is the skilled and the better educated who are most likely to emigrate. One way to understand what this involves is to look at the experience of the many young Polish people who came to Ireland during the Celtic Tiger boom; it turns out that they were the pioneers of forms of European emigration that we see now not just in Ireland but in other crisis countries such as Italy.

At Trinity College Dublin, Professor Wickham is the Director of the Employment Research Centre, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Jean Monnet Professor of European Labor Market Studies in the Department of Sociology. His teaching has focused on work and employment in contemporary European society.

In his research he is especially interested in the relationship between employment and different forms of mobility, ranging from migration to business air travel. He has recently completed a study of Polish migrants in the Dublin labour market; his current research project ‘Learning from Poland’ compares Irish graduate emigration to that from Poland in the last decade. Separately he is working on the impact of the Irish financial crisis, especially personal debt, on people’s ability to travel for work and pleasure. He has written many academic journal articles and is the author of ‘Gridlock: Dublin’s Transport Crisis and the Future of the City’; he is co-author of the forthcoming book ‘New Mobilities in Europe: Polish Migration to Ireland post-2004.’

Professor Wickham is a Fellow of Trinity College, holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sussex and a BSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics.

TSA Prohibited Items List Changing April 25th

TSA Prohibited Items List Changing April 25th:

TSA established a committee to review the prohibited items list based on an overall risk-based security approach. After the review, TSA Administrator John S. Pistole made the decision to start allowing the following items in carry-on bags beginning April 25th:
  • Small Pocket Knives – Small knives with non-locking blades smaller than 2.36 inches and less than 1/2 inch in width will be permitted
  • Small Novelty Bats and Toy Bats
  • Ski Poles
  • Hockey Sticks
  • Lacrosse Sticks
  • Billiard Cues
  • Golf Clubs (Limit Two)
This is part of an overall Risk-Based Security approach, which allows Transportation Security Officers to better focus their efforts on finding higher threat items such as explosives. This decision aligns TSA more closely with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
These similar items will still remain on the prohibited items list:

  • Razor blades and box cutters will remain prohibited in carry-on luggage.
  • Full-size baseball, softball and cricket bats are prohibited items in carry-on luggage.
Visit TSA.gov for more information on  small knives permitted in carry-on luggage and sporting equipment permitted in carry-ons. Again, please note these changes are effective April 25, 2013.

Sincerely,
Caro Kinsella Attorney & Counselor at Law

New York Irish History Roundtable

Presents

An Irishwoman in New York: A Memoir
A Discussion with Maura Mulligan
Author, Call of the Lark

Saturday, March 23, 2013

2:00pm – 3:30pm

Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral
Parish House
263 Mulberry Street
New York, N.Y. 10012

Join the New York Irish History Roundtable and author Maura Mulligan for an evocative and vivid discussion of an Irishwoman’s experiences in New York.

Ms. Mulligan will take us on an immigrant’s journey from rural County Mayo to the bustling City of New York ‐ 1958. She’ll discuss how she adapted to a complex and diverse new culture, her first job, her first subway ride, her desire to embrace religious life as a novice in a Franciscan novitiate in Peekskill, New York, and her decision –16 years later – to leave the convent and join the world once again.

Ms. Mulligan’s memoir, Call of the Lark, is a moving portrait of one woman’s strength and determination to forge a fulfilling life. Irish Echo columnist Larry Kirwan described Call of the Lark as “an essential, revealing chapter in the Irish‐American story.”

About our guest speaker:
Since those early days in New York, Ms. Mulligan has had a varied career. She’s taught English as a second language in New York City’s public schools, and currently teaches Irish language and dance in the New York area.  Her writings have appeared in the Irish Times, Irish America, The Irish Echo, the Irish Examiner, Set Dancing News and on the websites ducts.org and mrbellersneighborhood.com. She’s also been a featured reader at various literary venues, including the Thalia Café at Symphony Space, and at Molloy College.

About the New York Irish History Roundtable:
The New York Irish History Roundtable was founded in 1984 to promote interest in and research on the history of people of Irish heritage in New York City. It provides opportunities for members to exchange information, and to learn from each other, about the complex relationship between the Irish and New York City since the colonial period. For more information or to join the New York History Roundtable, visit our website atwww.irishnyhistory.org

Ms. Mulligan will sign copies of Call of the Lark, which will be available for purchase.

Coffee & tea will be served following the talk.
Suggested Donation: $3.00

Author Maura Mulligan is a member of the County Mayo Society of New York.

Thanks,

Cathy

Clean VAWA Bill Passes the House and Heads to the President’s Desk!

Moments ago, the House of Representatives voted down the bad House VAWA substitute bill on a vote of 257 to 166.After the substitute was defeated, the House then took up the original bipartisan Senate bill 47, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, which quickly passed with broad bipartisan support (286 yeas to 138 nays).

Clean VAWA Bill Passes the House and Heads to the President’s Desk!
