Hi everyone

Following is an update on the accommodation option open Summer J-1’s and other visa holders. This option is provided through one of Failte 32’s Strategic Partners, Internship USA.
Following a request by both Failte 32 and the Aisling Irish Community Center, Tom Griffin, of Internship USA, has very kindly offered a discount on accommodation rates to Irish visa holders. See attached FAQs.
Although initially one may think that even the discounted rate may seem a little high, it is reasonably good value for Manhattan for those who prefer the Manhattan experience, all things considered.
Further discounts can be achieved when you reserve a double room at a per person cost of $1095 if made as part of a group booking (4 people or more). Therefore, it’s important that you make your reservation first through either Failte 32 or the Aisling Irish Community Center so that we can coordinate requests into a group booking to avail of this additional discount.
Considering that you will not have other rental costs to pay such as electricity, power etc, and there is no upfront monthly (or two monthly!) rental deposit required aside from a $100 key deposit returned upon departure, this seems to be a pretty good deal for Manhattan accommodation. Additionally, you won’t have the burden of having to look for accommodation immediately after you arrive, which can be a daunting task and make your first experience of the Big Apple one of desperation rather than enjoyment. Further, if you’re based in Manhattan and find a job in Manhattan as many do, you may also be able to limit your travel expenses.
Please see the price reductions highlighted in green on page 1 of the attached ‘New York Student Residence’ doc.

If you come across any Irish students seeking an internship in:
1. Health & Safety / Occupational Health & Safety (compliance, OHSA etc.)
or
2. Accounting (accounting dept. of a discount fashion retailer, 120+ stores nationwide)
…to gain work experience (unpaid), Tom has two host companies keen to take someone on. The fee they charge for setting everything up is $2,000 / 1,500 EUR, though they have been doing a post-St. Patrick’s Day promotion which can still be applied. They also have an installment payment plan. Attached is their Internship flyer.
These internships may be suitable for those intending coming back to the U.S. on longer-term visas once they have completed their studies back home, and who are willing to spend some extra time and expense now for the possibility of better full-time job opportunities later on.
