I received an email from a good friend of Failte 32, Mike Dunphy, who is trying to help a friend of his here in NY.

His friend is the captain of the Laois Football team back home. He can do construction work and also would be willing to do bar work.

We hear there is a well coordinated effort being planned by the Irish Centers/Organizations and the Irish Consulate here in NY to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy by bringing as many volunteers as possible to some of the hardest hit areas to help out on Nov. 24. There is heaps of work to be done so they will need as many hands as possible. Failte 32 will be supporting this effort, so if any of you are free on the day, it would be great if you could join us. We don’t have all the details yet but buses will be available to pick you up and drop you back again. The United Counties Association of NY (www.uicany.org) is also asking for 3 volunteers from each County Society in New York to join in this effort. The Limerick Society of NY already has at least three volunteers lined up.

 

Update from Aisling Irish Community Center:

 

 

 

While the volunteers were checking on residents in one apartment block, the power came back on throughout the complex after almost two weeks – the place erupted in a cheer of celebration! It was a relief to see Red Cross out there. We were also accompanied by a medical team from Occupy Sandy to check on elderly residents as we went from door to door. They promised to take swift action with prescriptions that needed to be filled.

 

Some of our volunteers teamed up with Habitat for Humanity and did all that was needed to be done to make somebody’s house a home again.

 

While our volunteers were going door to door to check on elderly and homebound residents to assess their needs, prescription refills of vital medicine and the need for medical personnel became very evident. It was weighing heavily on our volunteers’ minds that there were people in these high rise apartment blocks with serious medical conditions who could not get out of their homes because they are unable to climb 10-12 flights of stairs due to age or ill health. WHY in New York City, where medicine is so advanced and doctors are so knowledgeable, are ordinary people like us so concerned about the health of these people when it should be the medical professionals knocking on their doors? Doesn’t anybody realize that these people have no way of contacting the outside world right now for help and they are unable to get their prescription medication filled or ask for medical attention? While it may not be as serious as somebody with a heart condition, we met an elderly man who had scalded himself trying to boil a kettle in darkness and was literally nursing his own wounds. Unless something is done now to help these people, the chances are they won’t be around to answer the next knock on their door.

HURRICANE SANDY NYIC COLLECTING EMERGENCY DONATIONS AGAIN THIS WEEKEND   The New York Irish Center will accept donations of emergency supplies for Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts at the following times this weekend (Nov 17th and 18th) at 1040 Jackson Avenue, LIC (Queens), NY 11101: Saturday 9am – 1pm Sunday 9am – Noon All available NYIC volunteers are asked to come at these times to assist in sorting and packing donations. DONORS: It is important to closely review this prioritized list below before bringing anything to our Center: Needed Supplies List CLEANING Work Gloves, Mops, Brooms, Shovels, Snow Shovels, Water Hoses/Pressure Hoses, Dust Masks (N95 Particulate Filtering Faceplate Respirator is best for this cleanup and is affordable), Goggles, Bleach (small bottles), Contractor Bags, Large Sponges, Cleaning Cloths, Shopping Carts and Wheelbarrows (for transporting supplies on foot in stricken areas). HEAT AND LIGHT (no power in stricken areas!) Batteries (C and D are most needed), Power Strips,Lamps, Flashlights. TOILETRIES/BABY SUPPLIES Tooth Brushes, Tooth Paste,Tissues, Toilet Paper Feminine Products, Wipes, Diapers, Adult Diapers,Hand Sanitizer, Deodrant, Laundry Detergent FIRST AID Cough Medicine (adults and children),  Advil/Aleve Band-Aids, Neosporin, Alcohol Solution/Pads. NON-PERISHABLE FOOD Canned Food (Easy Open Cans Please), Granola Bars Dry Goods and ready to eat meals, Baby Food, Baby Formula, Parmalat,Juice Boxes CLOTHES AND BEDDING We cannot accept any general clothing, or any bedding, blankets or quilts.  DO NOT BRING!! Shelters within our reach are not accepting these items. DONORS: WHERE POSSIBLE, PLEASE PACK YOUR DONATIONS IN EASY-TO-TRANSPORT STURDYLABELED CARDBOARD BOXES.  THOSE ATTENDING OUR MOVIE ON FRIDAY NIGHT CAN BRING ALONG THEIR DONATIONS AT THAT TIME Your generosity towards the many people in our region that are truly suffering, is greatly appreciated.
